Objects: Plaits.

Let's be honest, plaits are awesome. Wearing them when young makes you look super cute, and wearing them in your teenage and adult years makes you look super beautiful (well, most of the time). It is a given fact, probably.
However, my impatience has often led me to foolishly cut my hair too soon, and therefore, I have been left plait-less for a good few years. When my hair is long enough, I will wear some form of plait every day. Promise.
So, here is the complication of my reasons and opinions as to why I think PLAITS are good.

20 REASONS WHY I THINK PLAITS ARE GOOD

1. Plaits are so resiliant that even Miss Trunchball couldn't defeat them (if you haven't read Roald Dahl's 'Matilda', this will completely pass you by...and...you should do. Now.)

2. Plaits are very versatile and come in many different shapes and sizes- for both long and medium-length hair.

3. Braiding hair can also reduce the need to wash- why do you think so many people get their hair corn-rowed on holidays?

4. When I was little, I always dreamt of having my hair braided and having little beads put on the end, like my friend whose family went to Barbados every year. One day...one day.

5. Plaits are easy to do in the morning, and always keep your hair looking neat and tidy.

6. If your hair is short or you've got clusmy hands, plait extensions and hair bands are widely available to buy in accesories and fashion shops on the highstreet.

7. Plaits are VERRRY this season- one of the ~hot trends~ is Swedish folk, and what could be more Scandinavian than a charming braid in your hair?

8. Plaits aren't just reserved for women- men can wear them too! But you will look like a Jedi (not necessarily a bad thing..)

9. Getting your hair braided is generally very inexpensive- and even cheaper if you do it yourself!

10. Cornrows are commonly worn by people with afro-carribean hair (both men and women) as it helps to tame what may otherwise be slightly unruly, or hard-to-manage hairdos.

11. Despite being usually associated with the younger generation, they can be worn at any age due to the vast range of styles that can be worn.

12. http://musiconthemake.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/bjork_medulla.jpg Because I've wanted to do this with my hair since time began.

13. Plaits are a great hairstyle for troubled skin- keeping potentially dirty or greasy hair away from your face will ensure there is no transference onto your face- reducing the risk of break outs and oily skin.

14. Plaits aren't just reserved for hair- they are used all over the world in nautical, decorative, and fashion items also.

15. Plaits are perfect boho cool.

16. Ponies wear plaits=Ponies are cute=Plaits are cute.

17. Plaits are by far one of the most expressive hairstyles- with proper wiring and a heck of a lot of hairspray, they can be absolutely barmy.

18. FRIENDSHIP BRACLETS! My Mum once pain-stakingly made 100 friendship bracelet plaits for mine, my brother and sister's joint birthday party (for friend's goodie bags). She's my hero.

19. Pippi Longstockings wears plaits...and she's pretty darn cool.

20. Plaits are so good even bakers plait bread.

20 FACTS ABOUT PLAITS

1. A braid (also called plait) is a complex structure or pattern formed by intertwining three or more strands of flexible material such as textile fibres, wire, or human hair.

2. Compared to the process of weaving a wide sheet of cloth from two separate, perpendicular groups of strands (warp and weft), a braid is usually long and narrow, with each component strand functionally equivalent in zigzagging forward through the overlapping mass of the others.

3. The simplest possible braid is a flat, solid, three-strand structure in some countries/cases called a plait.

4. Braids are commonly used to make rope, decorative objects, and hairstyles (also see pigtails, French braid). Complex braids have been used to create hanging fibre artworks.

5. Braiding is also used to prepare horses' manes and tails for showing, polo and polocrosse.

6. Cornrows, also known as braids and in American English sometimes referred to by the slang term crows, are a traditional African style of hair grooming where the hair is braided very close to the scalp, using an underhand, upward motion to produce a continuous, raised row.

7. Cornrows are often formed, as the name implies, in simple, straight lines, but they can also be formed in complicated geometric or curvilinear designs.

8. Often favored for their easy maintenance, cornrows can be left in for weeks at a time if maintained through careful washing of the hair and regular oiling of the scalp. If the scalp is not oiled properly, prolonged styling with cornrows can result in dandruff and major hair loss however.

9. Cornrowed hairstyles are often adorned with beads or cowry shells, in the African and Caribbean tradition. Depending on the region of the world, cornrows are typically worn by either men, women or both.

10. A traditional way of styling hair across the African continent, depictions of women with cornrows have been found in Stone Age paintings in the Tassili Plateau of the Sahara that have been dated as far back as 3000 B.C.

11. Historically, male styling with cornrows can be traced as far back as the early nineteenth century to Ethiopia, where warriors and kings such as Tewodros II and Yohannes IV of Ethiopia were depicted wearing cornrows.

12. In the Asian tradition, Mixed Martial Arts fighters with long hair also often sport the cornrow hairstyle during matches to protect the hair from being ripped off while grappling.

13. Cornrow hairstyles are now often offered to tourists in resort areas of the Caribbean.

14. Cornrows acquired some popularity among White Americans and Europeans after blonde actress Bo Derek wore beaded cornrows in the popular Blake Edwards 1979 movie 10, and became widely popular once again with the spread of hip-hop culture in the 1990s.

15. Braids pulled too tight or worn for considerable lengths of time can cause a type of hair loss known as traction alopecia.

16. Over the years, cornrows, along with dreadlocks, have been the subject of several disputes in the American workplace. Some employers have deemed them unsuitable for the office and have banned them – sometimes even terminating employees who have worn them. African American employees and civil rights groups have countered that such attitudes evidence racial and cultural bias. Some such disputes have resulted in litigation.

17. In 2011, the High Court of the United Kingdom, in a decision reported as a test case, ruled against a school’s decision to refuse entry to a student with cornrows; the school claimed this was part of its policy mandating ‘short back and sides’ haircuts and disallowing styles that might be worn as indicators of gang membership, but the court ruled that the student was expressing a family tradition and that such policies, while possibly justifiable in certain cases (e.g. skinhead gangs), had to accommodate reasonable ethnic and cultural practises.

18. Plaiting (or braiding) with kangaroo leather has been widely practised tradition in rural Australia since pioneering times. It is used in the production of fine leather belts, hatbands, bridles, dog leads, bullwhips and stockwhips etc. Other leathers are used for the plaiting of heavier products suitable for everyday use.

19. Gold braids and silver braids are components or trims of many kinds of formal dress, including military uniform (in epaulettes, aiguillettes, on headgear).

20. Braids are often used figuratively to represent interweaving or combination, such as in "He braided many different ideas into a new whole."
